Energy Difference Based Fault Detection in Standalone Microgrid

The expansion of distributed generation (DG) within microgrid systems is significantly hindered by the considerable challenges linked with protection mechanisms. The formulation of an effective protection strategy for a microgrid presents a multifaceted challenge. The integration of DGs, alongside the dynamic characteristics of current, markedly alters the fault levels within the microgrid. To mitigate this problem, a straightforward and rapid protection methodology predicated on the Teager Kaiser Energy Operator (TKEO) is proposed in this manuscript for the safeguarding of standalone microgrids. This methodology necessitates the measurement of current at both extremities of the line to extract the energy from the current signal. The disparity in energy of the current signal is employed to identify the presence of faults. The proposed approach has been evaluated on a standalone microgrid across various fault types. Furthermore, it is devoid of computational complexity, thereby inherently expediting the fault detection process.
