Hyperbaric oxygen therapy for avascular necrosis of femur

Avascular necrosis (AVN) is a disease condition in which loss of blood supply to bone tissue leads to progressive bone destruction and joint dysfunction. Conventional treatment options include pharmacological management, core decompression, and joint replacement, but alternative therapies such as hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) are emerging as potential adjuncts to improve outcomes. This case report presents a patient diagnosed with AVN who underwent HBOT, demonstrating significant clinical and radiological improvement. The patient received a structured HBOT regimen, which led to pain relief, enhanced mobility, and improved radiographic signs suggestive of bone regeneration. These findings incline towards HBOT playing an important role in managing AVN, potentially delaying or preventing the need for surgical intervention. Further research is warranted to establish standardized protocols and determine the long-term benefits of this modality.
