Digital transformation through the introduction of new technologies, sophisticated information systems, and artificial intelligence (AI, Blockchain, XBRL, Cloud computing, Fintech, big data...) is improving the financial reporting process and existing professional regulations (digital financial reporting and IFRS taxonomy), thus impacting the knowledge and skills expected from accountants in the digitalization era.The aim of this paper is to highlight the positive aspects of digitalization in modern business, as well as certain open questions and challenges posed by the application of new technologies within the accounting profession. In this paper, after introductory remarks, the subject of research, and a review of relevant academic and professional literature, an overview of the results of some available studies is provided. These studies indicate the positive changes that occur as a result of the application of new technologies, digital financial reporting, and the use of XBRL (eXtensible Business Reporting Language). However, they also highlight numerous challenges and limitations that may lead to a change in the traditional role of the accounting profession in the era of business digitalization and the increasing use of artificial intelligence. The final section of the paper synthesizes the key messages and conclusions.
