Herpes Zoster of the Mandibular Nerve: Case Report and Management
Abstract Herpes zoster (HZ), also referred to as shingles, is a viral infection triggered by the revival of the varicella-zoster virus (VZV), which primarily leads to chickenpox in children. The VZV remains latent in the sensory ganglia and reactivates later in life due to various predisposing factors, including advanced age, immunocompromised conditions, or stress. A female patient of 55 years presented with unilateral multiple vesicles and pain on the left side of the face extending from midline to the vermillion border of the lip. The diagnosis of HZ involving the mandibular nerve was confirmed through characteristic lesions and patient history. Antiviral therapy and pain management were initiated. Resolution of the lesions and pain relief were achieved with no complications. This case emphasizes the need for early recognition and prompt treatment of HZ. A collaborative approach between dental and medical professionals will reduce the impact of HZ and improve the prognosis.
