Histiocytic Sarcoma: An Unusual Tumor Posing Diagnostic Challenge
Abstract Histiocytic sarcoma (HS) is an unusual but aggressive tumor arising from non-Langerhans histiocytic cells of the immune system. It shows highly pleomorphic spindle-shaped cells resembling other sarcomas, posing the diagnostic difficulty. The tumor can present as localized masses or widespread disease affecting the skin, soft tissue, and gastrointestinal system. Diagnosing HS requires a multi-faceted approach. Radiographic imaging will reveal the presence of a mass lesion, whereas histopathological and immunohistochemical analyses are essential for confirming the diagnosis and differentiating it from other mimickers. This sarcoma has a grave prognosis with a mean survival of 6 months, highlighting the aggressive nature of the malignancy and the limitations of the current treatment strategies. Our case underlines the importance of accurate diagnosis and differentiation from other sarcomas, as treatment options and outcomes can vary depending on the diagnosis.
