Chondrosarcoma Metastasis to the Choroid and Pleura: A Rare Case Report
Abstract Chondrosarcomas (CS) are locally aggressive malignant tumors that produce cartilaginous matrix, primarily affecting individuals aged 30 to 60. They mostly occur in pelvis and long bones, with rare pleural and intraocular metastases. The incidence of Chondrosarcoma metastasizing to both pleura and choroid is extremely rare, with an estimated annual incidence of 1 in 200,000 in United States. This report presents a 57-year-old male with history of central chondrosarcoma of sternum, initially treated surgically four years ago. He returned with a growing shoulder swelling, breathlessness, and vision blurring. Imaging showed large mediastinal lesion, pleural effusion, lung metastases, and a choroidal mass in right eye. Cytology and biopsy confirmed high-grade chondrosarcoma metastases. To best of our knowledge, this is the India’s first documented case, with only three prior cases of intraocular metastasis reported in English literature. This study emphasises the aggressive nature and poor prognosis of High-grade Chondrosarcoma, highlighting need for vigilant long-term follow-up and multidisciplinary management.
