Annals of Phytomedicine (AP)

Catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs) are primarily linked to biofilm formation, which hinders effective treatment and contributes to increased morbidity and mortality. This highlights the urgent need for alternative therapeutic agents capable of targeting biofilm-forming pathogens.Hence, our study investigated the antimicrobial activity of the methanolic extract of the aerial parts of Stachytarpheta jamaicensis (L.) Vahl against CAUTI-causing organisms, and it showed potent activity with a minimum inhibitory concentration of 1-2 mg/ml of extract. In addition, the methanolic extract of the aerial parts of S. jamaicensis was evaluated for antibiofilm activity against CAUTI-causing microbes using the crystal violet method, which demonstrated its ability to inhibit biofilm formation by the test pathogens.Further, the effect of the methanolic extract of S. jamaicensis on mature biofilms of the test pathogens was studied, and biofilm eradication was quantified, showing 85%, 90%, 88%, and 89% eradication following treatment with 3X MIC of the extract. In addition, an in vitro bladder model revealed that catheters coated with the methanolic extract of S. jamaicensis exhibited excellent antimicrobial activity against the test pathogens.Furthermore, the extract demonstrated antioxidant properties and showed no cytotoxic effects on L929 cells. In conclusion, the methanolic extract of the aerial parts of S. jamaicensis may serve as a potential alternative agent for the treatment of CAUTI.
