VIDEOGAMES IN CHINA – GOVERNMENTAL REGULATIONS, SOCIETAL CHALLENGES, AND CULTURAL IMPLICATIONS
China’s gaming industry represents a dynamic intersection of cultural evolution, economic strength, and regulatory challenges. This article examines the historical development of video games in China, the socio-political responses to gaming addiction, and the role of government-imposed restrictions. From the rise of domestic game developers like Tencent to the implementation of strict measures such as identity verification and gameplay time limits for minors, this study highlights China’s efforts to balance cultural preservation and economic growth with societal well-being. The findings suggest that while regulations have curbed excessive gaming among youth, the broader implications for privacy and individual freedoms remain contentious.
