THE ART OF TRANSLATION IN CHINA AT THE BEGINNING OF THE 20TH CENTURY – LIANG QICHAO, YAN FU, LIN SHU
The present article focuses on translation work in China during the late imperial period and the early Republican period. The research examines the work and legacy of the following influential figures: Liang Qichao (梁启超), Yan Fu (严复), and Lin Shu (林纾). During the late Qing dynasty (1636–1912), literary translation reached a new peak in translation history. Most of the translated texts that appeared in China at that time were by Western authors. The translation of Western literature, particularly political texts, was initiated by political reformers and erudite scholars and played a significant role in introducing new ideas, Western ideologies, and democratic progress.
