De mens achter de onderzoeker
The human behind the researcher: Emotional fuss in criminological research Criminologists often study sensitive topics which not only challenge researchers intellectually, but also emotionally. Through field research, interviews with victims or offenders, and (image-based) data, criminologists are confronted, in different ways, with the dark side of humanity. In this article, the authors reflect on the emotional challenges of conducting criminological research, by reviewing scientific literature on the origin and consequences of ‘emotional fuss’, and share personal experiences of conducting research into child sexual exploitation and international crimes, respectively. Talking about and addressing the everyday emotional fuss involved in criminological research can prevent more serious consequences.
