An Overview of Emerging UWB Standards and Protocols
The world is continuously advancing in various technologies, and Ultra-Wideband (UWB) is emerging as a key innovation, offering precise and accurate location-based services. With its growing popularity and increasing global adoption, the question of interoperability between UWB-enabled devices naturally arises. This is addressed by UWB standardizations established by various industry groups and consortiums. This paper delves into different UWB standards and organizations to understand the compatibility mechanisms provided by each standard. This begins with examining the standardizations established by IEEE, from IEEE 802.15.4 to IEEE 802.15.4z, highlighting their evolution and significance. Following this, there is another UWB standard consortium named the Car Connectivity Consortium (CCC) and its UWB standardization efforts, particularly focusing on the latest Digital Key Release 3.0 solutions, which prioritize Smart Vehicle Access. Next, another consortium FiRa Consortium, which emphasizes UWB standardization through its CSML specification. This specification plays a critical role in enabling device interoperability and fostering the development of a unified UWB ecosystem. At the end, Apple’s UWB protocol, known as the Apple Nearby Interaction Protocol, facilitates seamless interoperability within Apple’s UWB-enabled device ecosystem. By covering these standards and protocols, this paper aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the advancements and interoperability provisions that are driving the widespread adoption of UWB technology.
