Impact of Automated Grade Control in Crawler Dozers for Job Sites in India
The absence of skilled operators poses a growing challenge, particularly evident in crawler dozers, where less experienced operators often encounter issues such as the "washboarding" effect, where grading errors compound with each pass. This effect stems from various factors, exacerbated by poorly balanced machines. This study focuses on exploring diverse autonomous grading technologies in dozers and their benefits, especially concerning the demand in India for tasks like road construction, site preparation, land clearing, field leveling, and landfill management activities. Research indicates that machines equipped with 2D and 3D grade control systems exhibit significantly higher efficiency, up to 2 to 3 times more productive than crawler dozers lacking grade controls, depending on the operational requirements. Leveraging advanced dozer technologies such as GPS-guided systems for precise grading, telematics for remote monitoring and fleet management, and automation features enhances operational efficiency, reducing operator inputs by up to 80% [1]. Adopting these technologies enhances operational efficiency and provides machine owners with increased productivity, cost savings, and improved job site performance. This paper also focuses on the procedure to convert a traditional machine into a smart machine by deploying the grade control third-party solutions. It has been observed that with the implementation of the grade control system, the productivity of the crawler dozer improves by 69% for a highly skilled operator. Additionally, the customer benefits in terms of the amount of material moved per liter of fuel and cost, which is elaborated on in this paper.
