Hierarchical assembly of short double-stranded DNA in a molecularly crowded environment
Abstract Double-stranded DNA (dsDNA) formed a liquid crystalline phase under molecularly crowded conditions. A single type of short dsDNA having 2-base overhangs spontaneously self-assembled into microsized hexagonal platelets in a solution containing poly(ethylene glycol) and salt. Remarkably, combining 2 dsDNAs of different lengths resulted in stepwise assembly formation, with the overhangs modulating the overall morphology by altering the growth direction.
