Bridging the gap in digital citizenship literacy: Insights from young digital natives

This study examines the implementation of digital citizenship education, focusing on the challenges and strategies required to bridge the gap in digital citizenship literacy among young digital natives. The research explores how digital citizenship literacy, which includes essential skills such as digital etiquette, critical evaluation of online information, digital security, and media interaction, is integrated into educational frameworks. By analyzing the experiences of individuals aged 15-25, this study identifies key areas where improvements are necessary to foster active, ethical, and informed digital citizens. Utilizing a mixed-methods approach, this research combines survey data with qualitative analysis and data triangulation to assess digital citizenship literacy across various dimensions, including technology application, responsibility, leadership, and communication. The findings highlight the need for enhanced education on privacy settings and digital security, as young digital citizens often lack sufficient awareness in these areas. Additionally, the study emphasizes the importance of community involvement in social campaigns as a means to collectively promote digital citizenship literacy. The results suggest that a comprehensive approach is required to equip students with the necessary knowledge, skills, and attitudes to navigate the digital world responsibly. The study calls for innovative educational strategies that incorporate digital citizenship principles and promote active participation in digital communities. These strategies will enable students to develop critical thinking, ethical behavior, and the capacity to handle challenges posed by misinformation and online security threats. The study underscores the urgency of integrating digital citizenship education into school curricula to prepare students for the complexities of the digital age.
