Mediating effects of sustainability-oriented innovation on the relationship between organizational creativity and sustainable performance among Chinese manufacturing SMEs

This research investigates the dynamic intersection of sustainable performance, innovation, and management practices in Chinese small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), with a particular focus on the manufacturing sector. It begins by examining the historical evolution of sustainable development (SD) and its growing significance in the context of modern business operations. The study highlights the unique institutional, cultural, and economic challenges faced by Chinese manufacturing SMEs in implementing sustainable practices. Central to the discussion are two key constructs: sustainability-oriented innovation (SOI) and organizational creativity (OC), both of which are explored as critical drivers of sustainable transformation. The research emphasizes the necessity for firms to integrate innovative and sustainable strategies into their core operations in order to achieve long-term environmental, social, and economic benefits. Despite growing interest in sustainability, there remains a notable gap in understanding how SOI influences sustainable performance specifically within Chinese SMEs. Moreover, existing studies often overlook the role of organizational creativity in adapting sustainable practices to China’s unique business environment. This study seeks to address these gaps by providing deeper insights into how SOI and OC interact to foster sustainable development and competitive advantage. The findings aim to contribute to both academic literature and practical strategies that support the sustainable growth of Chinese manufacturing SMEs in a rapidly evolving global landscape.
