Evaluating Equivalent Effect on Two English Translations of Bulleh Shah’s “Ilmoun Bas Kari O Yaar”: A Comparative Study Using Nida’s Model

This research has discussed the quality of the translations of the Ilmoun Bas Kari O Yar poems by Kartar Singh Duggal and R. A. Nicholoson, a well known Punjabi poet. The model of equivalent affect that is the work of Eugene Nida has been utilized in assessing the spiritual meaning and cultural subtexts of the work translated. A qualitative comparative analysis has been deployed to assess the issues that the translators in the two translations encounter with regards to the conceptual framework of Nida as regards to formal and dynamic equivalence. Semantic accuracy, stylistic integrity and emotional depth have been measured. Findings revealed that Duggal’s translation has more mystical depth and lyrical quality in contrast to the other one. Nicholson’s style is more rigid and loses emotional resonance. This highlights the issues related to translated mystical works where there are spiritual themes and cultural contexts. Such differences in translation highlighted by the study’s finding open the horizons for the interpretation of the texts across the borders, cultures and languages. Ultimately, this study demonstrates that the dynamic equivalence, as represented in Duggal’s translation, is more effective in preserving the transcendent quality of Bulleh Shah’s poetry.
