Hobbes’s doctrine of public reason
In this paper I will analyze Hobbes?s doctrine of the public reason. At the very beginning, I will try to provide an adequate definition and explanation of the idea of the public reason. I will list some basic characteristics and problems of liberal political philosophy in conncection with the idea of the public reason, and show how the idea of publuc reason tries to overcome these problems. I will also make a brief comparison between the public reason understood in the context of modern liberal theories, as well as indications present in the representatives of the social contract theory. The rest of the paper will deal exclusively with Hobbes?s political philosophy. The goal of the research will be to consider several possible interpretations of the public reason in Hobbes?s philosophy, as well as to indicate some basic objections that can be made to Hobbes?s point of view. In the concluding remarks, I will look back at all the previously presented arguments and present my position regarding whether the public reason, as understood by Hobbes, can represent a coherent doctrine.
