Characterization of Silica Optical Fibers for Ionizing Radiation Monitoring
The potential and limitations of silica optical fibers used for dosimetry applications are evaluated. Under irradiation, the macroscopic properties of the optical fibers are modified. Effects of radiation on optical properties of the fiber in terms of radiation induced attenuation (RIA) and the surface morphology were studied. RIA corresponds to an increase of the fiber attenuation when exposed to radiation and its response depends on the irradiation characteristics and of its profile of use. Their radiation sensitivity for different dose rates and two wavelengths has been observed. Changes in the surface morphology of the fibers were examined by Scanning Electron Microscopy and the Atomic Force Microscopy.
