Sustainable Building Model for a Habitat on Mars Using Green Technology

Building on Mars will be more complex than ever. Like many advancements in new technologies within the construction sector, we find ourselves in a different place in an extreme environment, one that requires new technologies and materials. Therefore, if humanity is to colonize Mars sustainably, we will need to formulate and manufacture our construction materials from in-situ sources, such as Martian soil. At the same time, some of the technological options we employ are using Martian soil to create sulfur concrete or compressed regolith. If we want to utilize Martian resources, we must limit the use of Earth-based construction technologies. Mars presents its own set of problems, which include high radiation, low gravity, extreme temperatures, and vast distances from Earth. Scientists have focused on habitat design and construction material technologies that are friendly to Mars, as well as the efficiency of resources, bottom-line robustness, and passive thermal insulation. They must be (Constructed to be) gas-tight to protect us from the radiation, large temperature variations, and pressure differences of different atmospheres, because of the habitable, sustainable systems we want to create. In this regard, the development of state-of-the-art, completely integrated robotics, 3D printing, and in situ-based material options is integral to these developments. All of these developments and options represent long-term resource sustainability and help reduce some environmental and logistical hurdles we will have to overcome to get to the point of being able to construct in a Mars environment. Through a proposed model, this research discusses some applied treatments that will help the beginning of life on Mars.

Abstract

Building on Mars will be more complex than ever. Like many advancements in new technologies within the construction sector, we find ourselves in a different place in an extreme environment, one that requires new technologies and materials. Therefore, if humanity is to colonize Mars sustainably, we will need to formulate and manufacture our construction materials from in-situ sources, such as Martian soil.
