Relationship between mechanical ventilation outcomes and body mass index among patients at Intensive Care Units

Background: Body weight changes daily throughout a patient’s stay in the intensive care unit as a result of many factors including fluid balance, nutritional status, type of acute illness, and presence of comorbidities. Aim of the study: To assess relationship between mechanical ventilation outcomes and body mass index at intensive care units. Research design: A descriptive correlational research design was used in this study. Setting: This study was conducted Al Mobara Hospital (general intensive care unit, and Assiut University Main hospital (general intensive care unit.). Sample: A convenience sample of both adult male and female patients undergoing admitted to the intensive care unit in the period of six months. Tools: Tool one: Patient's assessment sheet; tool two: Body Mass Index (BMI) scale and tool three: Patients evaluation sheet. Results: It was found that the mean & standard deviation of weight about 75.70 ± 13.555 and height about 165.19 ± 8.400. As regard body mass index about 32.9 % from the patients were normal weight, over weight and obesity. There was a relation between barotrauma, volutrauma and pulmonary embolism with body mass index obesity patients with p. value = 0.001*. Also, there was relation between hospital stay more than ten days with obesity and sever obesity patients with p. value = 0.001**. Conclusion: It can be concluded that there was relation between patient`s hospital stay on M.V more than ten days with obesity and sever obesity patients with p. value = 0.001**.
