The Performance of Vertical Bracing Types in High Rise Buildings Subjected to High Seismic Loading

High rise buildings subjected to lateral loading in critical seismic zone area are getting more attention these days . Many systems are used in high rise buildings, vertical bracing is one of the most effective systems to resist high earthquake. In this study the vertical bracing type, location and number of bays are analyzed using Etabs software. The study concluded that the type of bracing affected much the behavior of high rise building structures and the dimensions and locations of bracing and the number of bays are the key factor in the performance of these building structures. The usage of vertical bracing inside the building structure plan is more effective than the outside region, and also around the marginal edge the usage of vertical bracing is more effective in the edge of the building structures more than the corner of the building. The Drift and maximum displacement are compared for various bracing types according to the ACI code and ASCE 7-10 code. In conclusion, lateral displacement and drift reduction were most effectively achieved using A, V, and X bracing systems, respectively. N-bracing offered moderate reduction, while K-bracing proved least effective. Edge bracing configurations consistently outperformed corner bracing, reducing displacements by 18-28%. Internal bracing placement further improved displacement reduction by 3-6%, depending on the bracing type. Notably, employing three bracing bays significantly enhanced displacement reduction by 79-149% compared to single-bay bracing, with K-bracing showing the smallest improvement and A, V, and X bracing the largest
