Phytochemical, Traditional uses and Pharmacological activities of Genus Araucaria oleoresin
Background Resins and associated exudates have been used for thousands of years in traditional medicine to cure illnesses, and the pharmaceutical industry was employing them even before modern antibiotics were developed. As a result of the medicinal value of plant resin exudates, we will shed light on the resin of the genus Araucaria. Main body Araucariaceae is a small family of evergreen coniferous trees. It includes four genera, Araucaria, Agathis, Columbea, and Wollemia, that are extensively utilized for timber and ornamental purposes. Our review will focus on the distribution, the chemotaxonomy, and the traditional uses of genus Araucaria. Moreover, the phytochemistry, biological, and pharmacological activities of the resin from the genus Araucaria are reviewed. Nineteen Araucaria species were covered in this article. Additionally, the aim of this review is to focus on literature gap that related to genus Araucaria and provide vision for the future research direction. Conclusion The secondary metabolites of the resin of Araucaria species include lignans, diterpenes, fatty acids, and essential oil constituents. The anti-inflammatory, analgesic, anticancer, gastroprotective, and antimicrobial activities are the most common pharmacological effects reported for the different Araucaria species.
