Shining A Cultural Perspective into Active Ageing Patterns of Seniors in Singapore

The article provides insights into the different ethnic patterns of active ageing of seniors in Singapore based on the research conducted by the authors over the past decade. The methods used in the majority of the studies is qualitative interviewing and focus group discussions. The article is both descriptive and analytical as the meaning of 'purpose' varies according to the ethnic and cultural identity of older adults. Singapore is a multiracial society, consisting of many ethnic groups that have contributed towards its colourful landscape. Using a gerontological perspective, the multidisciplinary focus allows the author to delve deep into the various facets of the meaning of 'purpose' including psychological, cultural, social and spiritual. Four main themes emerged i.e. family-centred activities are meaningful, health-related activities are valued, community-based activities give joy and meet social needs and paid work provides a purpose to the lives of older adults. The data indicates that religious and spiritual pursuits are more attractive to the Indian and Malay ethnic groups as compared with the Chinese ethnic group, who prefer recreational activities such as physical exercise. The term 'active ageing' is given a cultural and spiritual flavour, overlaying the typical activities such as caregiving, physical exercise, and paid work. In conclusion, the author summarises that expanding the understanding of the active ageing concept with a cultural perspective provides scholars with deeper insights into the older adults’ choices and lifestyles.
