TIVADAR LEHOCZKY IN THE MIRROR OF UKRAINIAN HISTORIOGRAPHY: RESEARCH TRENDS (LATE 19TH CENTURY – 2024)

This article examines the biography and scholarly contributions of Tyvodar Legotsky (1830 – 1915) in the context of Ukrainian historiography. Based on contemporary scientific literature, the article analyzes little-known facts about his life and characterizes the influence of his works on the development of historical science. The collected materials allowed the identification of several stages in the reevaluation of T. Legotsky’s legacy. The first period, the Austro-Hungarian era (1867 – 1918), is associated with the establishment of the scientist’s academic studies. During this time, his works received both critical and favorable assessments, yet all researchers acknowledged the significance and thoroughness of his work. The second period – the Czechoslovak era and World War II (1918 – 1945) – is marked by the use of certain aspects of T. Lehoczky’s works in scholarly debates with representatives of the Hungarian historical school. Particular attention was given to the issue of Slavic settlement in the region, which researchers sought to substantiate by referencing his academic legacy. The third period, the Soviet era (1945 – 1991), followed the inclusion of Transcarpathian Ukraine into the Ukrainian SSR. During this time, Legotsky’s legacy was viewed through the lens of Marxist methodology. Some authors avoided in-depth analysis of his activities, yet even in these conditions, his contributions were largely positively assessed by Ukrainian scholars of the Soviet period. From 1990 onward, interest in Legotsky’s figure has increased. The fourth period, from 1991 onward, has sparked lively scientific debates over the biography and research activities of T. Legotsky, with deeper studies of his personality, the creation of bibliographic indices, and work on translating his works. However, a significant portion of his scientific legacy remains untranslated, complicating its use by contemporary researchers.
