A Survey on Food Image Processing and Nutrient Estimation via Deep Learning Techniques
Food processing has evolved over centuries, influencing the rise of non-communicable diseases (NCDs), a leading global cause of death. With deep learning and smartphone accessibility, a personalized food image recognition system with nutritional estimation can help manage NCD risks efficiently and non-invasively. This paper surveys relevant publications on the Frontiers platform, revealing a need for diverse food image databases with detailed nutrition data and highlighting nutrition estimation as a growing research area. By addressing these gaps, the authors contribute to future advancements in the field.
