Analysis of Vibration Characteristics and Operation Risk of Synchronous Condenser Rotor Under Dynamic Conditions With Inter-Turn Short Circuits Fault
Synchronous condenser may be subjected to significant vibrations caused by unbalanced magnetic pull(UMP), which arises from rotor inter-turn short circuit(RISC) faults during operation. This phenomenon can severely impact the stability and longevity of the machine. As a crucial device for dynamic reactive power compensation, the synchronous condenser is particularly susceptible to worsening rotor operating conditions under forced excitation in the presence of faults. This study first derives the analytical expression for the UMP acting on the rotor under RISC and analyzes the influence of such faults on UMP and rotor vibration characteristics. A 2D maxwell simulation model of the condenser is then developed to compute and analyze the characteristics of UMP under both normal and forced excitation with RISC. The Newmark integration method is employed to calculate the rotor vibration response. Finally, an experimental motor is used to test rotor vibrations, verifying the validity of the theoretical and simulation model.
