Microwave-Based System for Real-Time Dielectric Characterization of Biological Tissues
This paper presents the development of a portable system and a test platform for the non-invasive dielectric characterization of biological tissues. The main application envisaged in the long term is the identification of carotid atherosclerotic plaques, which can lead to strokes. The system integrates different sensors, in particular a full-custom S-band microwave sensor connected to an open-source Vector Network Analyzer (LibreVNA) and a small single-board computer (Raspberry Pi 4), for automated measurement and data processing. Developed in Python, this solution provides a low-cost and time-efficient method for determining the dielectric parameters of various human tissues.
