Electric Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) Energy Transfer Using Motor Inverter and Winding

The electrification of vehicles is one of the best approaches to reducing car emissions. Range anxiety is the main reason that limits the promotion of electric vehicles (EVs). In an emergency, energy transfer from one EV to another EV can alleviate range anxiety as it solves the “last mile” problem. However, the existing vehicle to vehicle (V2V) energy-sharing method based on motor inverters and motor windings does not consider efficiency optimization. To address this issue, a new V2V topology that adopts a control method with soft-switching with a lower switching frequency is proposed. The lower switching frequency can effectively reduce the motor core (silicon steel material) loss when the motor winding and core are an inductor during the V2V power transfer. The effectiveness of the proposed method is demonstrated by 150kW simulation and 1.5kW laboratory scale-down power experiments.
