CITY-SCALE APPLICATION OF AN INTEGRATED SOLAR PV AND V2H SYSTEM FOR TRANSPORT AND RESIDENTIAL ENERGY DEMANDS

Electrification of transport, especially private transport, is seen to be an integral part of emission reduction and climate action. However, its impact would be reduced without the shift to renewable energy in generating the additional electricity demand. Especially in city applications, solar PV would be a significant component of this shift because of the possibility of utilizing rooftop areas in city buildings. Integrated systems such as those employing storage and vehicle-to-home (V2H) technologies need to be studied to further solar PV applications. The shift towards EVs also provides additional temporary storage to augment the temporal limitations of solar PV generation. In this study, the solar PV potential of Quezon City, the most populous city in the Philippines, was estimated, as well as its residential and private transport energy demands assuming full EV integration. Charging and discharging control was done through cost minimization to determine the necessary generation, charging, storage, and augmentation needs of the integrated system. The estimated annual total incident irradiation in the study area is 1.16 MWh/m2. The available roof area of 17.2 km2, estimated using the Segment Anything model and shape analysis, would translate to a theoretical maximum installed capacity of 3.07 GW. Based on the cost minimization conducted, a 2.20 GWh storage capacity is needed to supply the transport and residential energy demands. This will result in an estimated 58% CO2 emission reduction per year. This can be increased with higher solar PV generation, though at a higher overall cost. The results of the study can be used to make policy decisions on the use of residential solar panels, V2H systems, EV adoption, and energy production.
