A Study on the Characteristics of the Spatial Expression of Marcel Wanders from the Heterotopia Perspective

This study examines how modern design can offer emotional and extraordinary experiences beyond everyday space, focusing on Dutch designer Marcel Wanders. His work transcends mere function by integrating sensory narrative, symbolism, and a blend of tradition and modernity. Analyzed through Michel Foucault’s concept of heterotopia, Wanders' spaces reflect four key traits : Sensory Extraordinariness, Hybrid Heterogeneity, Subversive Narrativity, and Fluid Boundary Experience. A comparative analysis of his major works reveals that his spaces function as experience-oriented heterotopic environments, forging emotional connections between users and cultural contexts, thus expanding the philosophical and cultural dimensions of contemporary design.
