A study on Artistry Using Gestalt Morphological Psychology : focusing on the analysis of works of art
This study begins by examining the relationship between Gestalt psychology and artistic expression, with a particular focus on how the principles of proximity, closure, and similarity influence both the artist’s creative process and the viewer’s visual perception. The aim is to explore the creative potential of visual and cognitive experiences in artworks through the lens of Gestalt theory. To this end, the research systematically analyzes artworks based on Gestalt principles and identifies recurring visual patterns. The findings are as follows: First, artists applying Gestalt principles dismantled the conventional boundaries between form and background, inducing impactful visual experiences. Second, the use of impossible structures and distorted perspectives disrupted the viewer’s logical perception. Third, the principles of closure and continuity led audiences to perceive incomplete images as whole forms. Fourth, illogical juxtapositions and symbolic imagery opened up multiple interpretive possibilities. Fifth, intentional perceptual distortions encouraged viewers to transcend established cognitive frameworks. In conclusion, the application of Gestalt principles in artistic creation suggests the potential for achieving visual hegemony and advancing creative expression. This research highlights the value of integrating Gestalt psychology into both the analysis and practice of art, offering new directions for future artistic inquiry and appreciation.
