The article examines the problem of small business development in the Far East. The importance of small business development in the region was noted, as it has a number of advantages in comparison with large-scale production, namely, it provides wide freedom of market choice and additional jobs, etc. The purpose of the article is to identify the problems and development of small and medium-sized businesses in the Far East. Statistical data of small and medium-sized enterprises in comparison with other regions of Russia are presented. A growing trend in the number of self-employed has been revealed. From the perspective of industry specifics, there is a smaller proportion of SMEs in the construction sector, and logistics activities prevail. Despite the general similarity of the economic situation with the development of SMEs in the Far East compared to other regions of Russia, it was found that the total contribution to the PRTR is lower in the Far Eastern Federal District. The need to continue implementing government support measures to maintain the pace of SME development has been identified: to increase the availability of capital, the integrated implementation of acceleration mechanisms, and approaches to improving business competencies. It is necessary to work out tools that would facilitate the qualitative transition of a business from micro to small, from small to medium, from medium to large business. An emphasis is required on the development of high-tech and innovative projects.
