Postresection Antiviral Treatment in Hepatocellular Carcinoma Patient with Undetected Hepatitis B virus DNA

A BSTRACT Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a lethal cancer, and resection therapy is the main curative treatment. Nonetheless, the recurrence rate is the main obstacle, and postresection antiviral therapy use in those with low-level HBV DNA is still a dilemma. We report the case of a 62-year-old male with Hepatitis B virus (HBV) related-HCC who underwent liver resection and continued to take nucleoside analog (NA) in a previously undetectable HBV DNA. The administration of antiviral therapy in these patients increased survival rates for 5 years, with time to first recurrence of 2 years postresection. The use of NA is associated with virus replication suppression and inflammation improvement. NA therapy effectively reduces the risk of HCC recurrence following curative therapy and improves survival rates even with low levels of viremia.
