Benefits and Challenges of Dental Implants in Pedodontics: An Umbrella Review
Abstract Aim: Dental implants are becoming more common in pedodontics for replacing lost teeth in children and adolescents. Although they provide many advantages, they also come with specific challenges. This umbrella review will comprehensively evaluate the benefits and difficulties of dental implants in pedodontics by assessing the techniques, surgical procedures, results, and complications of the primary research studies investigated in the systematic reviews. Materials and Methods: An extensive search of pertinent databases (PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science) yielded 336 research articles, of which six met the inclusion criteria. Data were collected and analyzed regarding benefits and components for practice, advantages and barriers, implementation considerations, and implications for practice. Results: In pedodontics, dental implants are used to increase oral function, aesthetics, and self-esteem, with a high success rate. However, several challenges exist when using implants in children related to growth and development, small jaw size, immature roots, and orthodontic issues. Complications associated with dental implants include implant failure, infections, and nerve damage. Conclusion: This umbrella review demonstrates the advantages and disadvantages of dental implants in children’s dentistry, the need for appropriate treatment planning and skill-based dental expertise, and the need for future research to improve outcomes and adapt to children’s needs.
