Patterned liquid crystal domain modulated amplitude holography

Precise control of the out-of-plane orientation of nematic liquid crystal molecules enables light-field amplitude modulation, which is expected to realize dissipative spots, and high-quality holographic displays. Liquid crystal polymer (LCP) films inherently consist of two types of domains with distinct out-of-plane orientation angles. However, their pseudorandom distribution hinders the ordered control over the out-of-plane alignment of the liquid crystal molecules. This work proposes ultraviolet (UV) polarized light oblique exposure to drive the transition of the LCP film from a dual-domain coexistence state to a uniform single-domain structure, achieving a conversion rate exceeding 98% and enabling well-ordered out-of-plane molecular alignment. By employing programmable stepping oblique exposing, we fabricated patterned domain LCP films and demonstrated amplitude holographic reconstruction. This approach provides a novel strategy for optical amplitude modulation, paving the way for advanced holographic display applications.
