The effect of calcium hydroxide premedication on marginal adaptation of white mineral trioxide aggregate and biodentine under scanning electron microscope – In vitro study
ABSTRACT Aim: The aim of this study is to evaluate and compare the marginal adaptation of white mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) and biodentine (BD) after medication with calcium hydroxide (Ca[OH] 2 ). Materials and Methods: A total of 28 single-rooted teeth were selected. Stimulation of open-apex was done by resecting the apical 2 mm root with diamond disc. All samples are standardized to have 12 mm root length. Working length was determined using 10 k file. Cleaning and shaping procedures were performed for all teeth, followed by the application of pure calcium hydroxide mixed with distilled water into the root canals. After a week, 28 teeth were divided into two groups: Group 1: biodentin - 14 teeth and Group 2 MTA - 14 teeth. Apical barrier of 4 mm was placed. Radiographs were taken to ensure proper placement of the apical barrier. A paper point was inserted into the canal, followed by placement of a temporary restorative material. Results: Scanning electron microscope analysis of the root ends revealed gaps between BD and the dentinal wall in all fourteen samples, averaging 3.0464. The average gap width between MTA and the dentinal wall in all fourteen samples was 3.3557. Conclusion: Within the limitation of the current study, it was concluded that BD has similar marginal adaptation to MTA. However, there is no significant difference in marginal adaptation after premedication with Ca (OH) 2 .
