Influence of family history on an individual’s awareness and perception of oral cancer risk

ABSTRACT Background: Family history of cancer is a significant risk factor influencing an individual’s awareness and perception of disease susceptibility. However, its role in shaping awareness and perception of oral cancer risk remains underexplored. Objective: To assess the influence of family history on an individual’s awareness and perception of oral cancer risk. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 200 participants. Data on awareness, risk perception, and family history of cancer were collected through a structured questionnaire and analyzed using statistical methods. Results: Participants with a positive family history of cancer demonstrated significantly higher awareness levels (P < 0.05). Perception of personal risk was also higher in this group. Statistical associations between knowledge scores and family history were observed. Conclusion: Family history plays a crucial role in influencing awareness and perceived risk of oral cancer. Targeted awareness programs are needed for individuals without a family history to bridge the knowledge gap.
