Building Community Ties
Abstract Social cohesion is crucial in unauthorized colonies such as Sangam Vihar and Khirki Extension, influencing residents’ trust and sense of belonging amidst urban challenges. This research examines social cohesion in these Delhi settlements using surveys and in-depth interviews. It highlights that while Sangam Vihar features a homogeneous, low-income population fostering strong community ties and collective action, Khirki Extension’s diverse population encounters difficulties in forming a unified identity due to its ethnic and economic variety. The study focuses on key indicators of cohesion, including community participation, trust among neighbors, and access to public services. Despite Sangam Vihar showing higher levels of community participation and interpersonal trust, Khirki Extension scores better in public service access. The findings suggest that both colonies strive for social unity through various engagement methods, such as participation in community events and local governance. However, the efforts in Khirki Extension reflect a struggle to cultivate deeper connections among its residents. Ultimately, while there are significant attempts to strengthen social ties within these informal settlements, achieving cohesive community identity remains an ongoing challenge.
