Multiangle Investigation of New Antioxidants to Improve the Performance of ABS Resin

ABSTRACT The reactive hindered phenolic antioxidant 3,5‐di‐tert‐butyl‐4‐hydroxybenzyl cinnamate (AO‐CA) was synthesized, and its chemical structure was characterized via Fourier transform infrared (FT‐IR) spectroscopy and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy ( 1 H NMR and 13 C NMR). The effects of AO‐CA on various properties (e.g., oxidation resistance) of acrylonitrile‐butadiene‐styrene terpolymer (ABS resin) under accelerated thermal aging conditions were investigated for the first time by combining various characterization methods. The results revealed that the weight loss temperature of the blank ABS samples was lower than that of the AO‐CA‐containing samples overall. The samples that contained AO‐CA had lower carbonyl index values, with a growth rate of 59.7%, while the growth rate of the carbonyl index of the blank ABS samples was 101%. The average impact strength of the AO‐CA samples was 21.73 KJ/m 2 , and that of the blank ABS samples was 20.59 KJ/m 2 . The average melt mass‐flow rate (MFR) of the AO‐CA samples was 2.12 g/10 min, whereas that of the blank ABS samples was 1.89 g/10 min. The growth rate of the yellowing index of the AO‐CA samples was 20.52%, whereas that of the blank ABS samples reached 102.27%. Therefore, AO‐CA improved the aging resistance of the ABS resin.
