Fabrication of Multifunctional Integrated Composites with Excellent Mechanical Synergistic Effects Producing from Aramid Honeycomb and Rigid Polyimide Foam

Aramid honeycomb (ARHC) almost has no insulation effects for dynamic heat and noise due to its hollow structure. Besides, ARHC loses stability easily under the continuous dynamic compression, seriously limiting its wide application. Thus, rigid polyimide foam (PIF) produced by the chemical foaming route is designed and used to make up for these deficiencies of ARHC, then a novel multifunctional‐integrated composite material named ARHC/PIF is generated. Rigid PIF and ARHC/PIF with controllable volume are prepared through closed mold‐forming process. The effects on sound absorption, thermal insulation, and compression performances of ARHC/PIF are systematically investigated. When density of rigid PIF filled in ARHC cores reaches 92.2 kg m −3 , ARHC/PIF‐3 presents remarkable synergistic effect in mechanical behaviors, the synergistic effects in compressive strength and compression work are 29.1% and 76.1%, respectively. Meanwhile, average sound absorption coefficient and noise reduction coefficient of ARHC/PIF‐3 reach 0.79 and 0.65, respectively. Moreover, thermal conductivity of ARHC/PIF‐3 is only 0.059 W m −1 K −1 , which means its greater thermal insulation performance than pure ARHC. These results indicate that this design derivates a multifunctional‐integrated composite material, it solves thin‐wall instability of ARHC and provides technical assistance to enhance comprehensive performance of serialized honeycomb composites.
