The Role of Railway Transport in Trade and Economic Cooperation Between Mongolia and China

With the development of global transport and logistics activities, Mongolia's position in relations with neighboring countries is constantly strengthening. In recent years, a number of regional agreements and initiatives have been developed and implemented regarding international logistics activities. Within the framework of the “One Belt, One Road” initiative, proposed in 2013, the People's Republic of China (PRC) supports regional integration by connecting its transport infrastructure with Mongolia, Russia and European countries. The implementation of joint projects, including railroad development and the expansion of border crossing points, facilitates the growth of trade turnover between the two countries. Railway transport is among the most efficient and cost-effective means of cargo transportation, particularly across the vast steppe and mountainous regions of Mongolia. Reduction of transportation costs and enhanced logistical conditions facilitate the expansion of Mongolia's raw material exports, including coal, copper, and other minerals, to the PRC. The development of railway infrastructure also fosters job creation, enhances transportation safety, and reduces environmental impact compared to road transport. Thus railway transportation plays a crucial role in enhancing trade and economic cooperation between Mongolia and PRC. Investments in transport infrastructure, joint projects, and logistics integration promote the stable development of bilateral trade and create favorable conditions for Mongolia's integration into international economic processes.
