Times Higher Education University Rankings: Top 100 Best Universities by Country (2011–2025)

This paper uses the Times Higher Education (THE) university rankings to examine the convergence and concentration rates of the top 100 universities from 2011 to 2025. In particular, the number of universities per country in the top 100 list is of interest in this study. The list is dominated by a very few countries, notably the US, UK, Germany, and the US, which account for an average of 64% of the total number of universities in the top 100 list. The top eight countries account for an average of 85% of the total number of universities in the "industry." The Herfindahl-Hirschman Index (HHI) has indicated moderate competition since 2013. In 2011 and 2012, the market showed signs of oligopolistic competition. During this period, the HHI declined, indicating an increase in competition between countries in the top 100 list of universities.
