BEYOND WORDS: INTERCULTURAL AND FUNCTIONAL CHALLENGES IN LEGAL AND JUDICIAL TRANSLATION
Legal and judicial translation is a specific domain of expert translation where linguistic accuracy and legal equivalence meet the complexities of divergent legal systems and cultures. This paper presents an overview of theoretical and practical dimensions of legal translation, covering key issues such as functional equivalence, terminological pathologies, translation during legal proceedings, and comparative difficulties between common law and civil law systems. Drawing on a range of academic sources and real-world translation cases, the paper highlights the need for interdisciplinary competence, legal-linguistic expertise, and cultural sensitivity in legal translation practice.
