The Anchoring Effect on Pension Choices: Understanding Bias in Retirement Decision-Making

This study examines the anchoring effecta cognitive bias where individuals overly rely on initial informationin the context of pension choices. The research plan includes a thorough review of the literature and analysis of real-world data from previous studies to find out how anchoring affects choices about how much to save for retirement, the type of annuity to choose, and how to invest the money. The primary problem addressed is how this bias leads to suboptimal pension outcomes, potentially jeopardizing financial security in retirement. Findings indicate that default options and initial framing significantly shape decisions, often causing individuals to stick with inadequate savings rates or inappropriate investment options. The study concludes that understanding and mitigating anchoring through policy interventions, like optimized defaults and improved communication, can enhance retirement planning. Given the complexity of pension systems and rising life expectancy, this research highlights a critical intersection of behavioral economics and retirement policy.
