Revision of Indigofera sect. Juncifoliae (Fabaceae: Indigofereae) from the Greater Cape Floristic Region
• We present a taxonomic revision of the Indigofera sect. Juncifoliae . • One new species, I. paludicola , is described. • All species are illustrated in detailed photographic plates. • IUCN red list statuses are recommended for every species. Indigofera sect. Juncifoliae Harv. is a small group of five species within the Cape Clade, restricted to the Core Cape Region (CCR). This section is quite distinctive in the region, with green, glabrous branches, stipels present on leaves, ephemeral leaves in several species, elongate and glabrous fruit, and typically grow in seasonally wet sandstone mountains from the coast to the first inland chain of Cape fold mountains. Indigofera filifolia Thunb., I. ionii Jarvie & C.H.Stirt. and I. gifbergensis C.H.Stirt. & Jarvie, were treated in a revision of the group in 1987, while I. fulcrata Harv. and I. paludicola du Preez & Schrire have recently been added to I. sect. Juncifoliae , with the latter being a new species described in this paper. Here we present a taxonomic revision of sect. Juncifoliae , with all five species formally described, and illustrated using photographic plates. Distribution maps and information regarding habitat preference, phenology, and ecology and recommended IUCN red list status of each species are also provided.
