A Research Study on the Field Performance Evaluation of Stone Matrix Asphalt Pavements

This research investigates the performance and durability of Stone Matrix Asphalt (SMA) pavements, particularly under high-traffic conditions. When compared to regular asphalt mixtures, SMA is better at resisting deformation, rutting, and fatigue cracking because it has a gap-graded aggregate structure and a high binder content. The study explores the feasibility of utilizing coconut shell charcoal as an eco-friendly alternative to traditional filler materials in SMA.Through a combination of laboratory experiments and field evaluations, SMA mixtures with coconut shell charcoal are assessed alongside those containing conventional fillers.Key performance parameters, including rutting resistance, fatigue life, moisture susceptibility, and environmental impact, are systematically analyzed. The findings aim to enhance the sustainability and longevity of SMA pavements by optimizing their material composition and structural design to withstand diverse traffic and environmental challenges.
