Comparative Study of Biofuels: Chemical Properties and Combustion Efficiency
Biofuels are increasingly being considered as sustainable alternatives to fossil fuels due to their renewability, lower greenhouse gas emissions, and potential to reduce dependence on petroleum-based energy sources. This paper presents a comprehensive comparative study of various biofuels—including bioethanol, biodiesel, and biogas with a focus on their chemical properties and combustion efficiency. The study reviews key parameters such as energy density, viscosity, flash point, cetane number, and calorific value, as well as their environmental impacts and combustion performance under different conditions. Through literature review, laboratory data analysis, and comparative metrics, the paper evaluates the suitability of each biofuel for different engine types and environmental settings. The findings indicate that while biodiesel offers superior lubricity and flash point, bioethanol exhibits higher oxygen content leading to cleaner combustion. Biogas, on the other hand, performs well in terms of greenhouse gas mitigation but shows limitations in energy density. This comparative analysis aims to support informed decision-making for stakeholders in the energy sector and guide future research on optimizing biofuel formulations for better performance and environmental sustainability.
