The Rise of Condom Intoxication among Youth: Insights from a Preliminary Survey

Background: The rise in the use of flavoured condoms for getting drunk amongst youths in Durgapur, West Bengal, is a matter of concern. An initial survey with 15 owners of local pharmacies showed an upsurge in flavoured condom sales, especially amongst unmarried students of 20–28 years of age, as compared to unflavoured condoms. The users dip condoms in hot water for hours to release intoxicating chemicals, which have harmful physical and psychological impacts. Aim and Objectives: The research investigates the new trend of flavoured condom abuse, its prevalence and related health implications. Its aim is to investigate the chemical composition that leads to intoxication and the social-legal context of this new trend. Methods: Design and sampling: A cross-sectional survey was performed by collecting qualitative information from 15 pharmacy owners based in Durgapur. Participants who were already aware of consumption patterns and client behaviour were picked using purposive sampling. Tools and procedure: Structured interviews were conducted amongst owners of pharmacies that assisted in the evaluation of patterns for condom sales, consumer populations and reported misuses. Data were further amplified by secondary resources such as medical reports and physicians’ opinions. Findings: The research established that chocolate-scented condoms were highly demanded because of their 10–12-h-long intoxicating effect. Glycerine and synthetic polyurethane resin are the reasons behind this. The adverse effects on health are impairment of cognitive function, lung and kidney injury and addiction-like effects. Even though the authorities are keeping an eye on the matter, there is a legal dilemma since condoms fall outside the realm of narcotic legislation. It is essential to raise community awareness and intervene psychiatrically to avert further abuse.
