Status of Markers of Oxidative Stress, Uric Acid, and Vitamin E at Different Stages of Pregnancy in Nigerian Women
Introduction: Pregnancy induces physiological and metabolic changes that impact oxidative stress markers. This study investigated alterations in total antioxidant potential (TAP), malondialdehyde (MDA), Vitamin E, and uric acid across trimesters. Aim: This study aimed to investigate alterations in total antioxidant potential (TAP), malondialdehyde (MDA), Vitamin E, and uric acid across trimesters. Material and Methods: Fifty-six pregnant women were divided into first ( n = 14), second ( n = 22), and third ( n = 21) trimesters, with 18 nonpregnant women serving as controls. Plasma levels of TAP, uric acid, and Vitamin E were determined using spectrophotometry. Results: Uric acid levels significantly increased in the first and second trimesters compared to controls. TAP and Vitamin E levels were significantly lower across all trimesters. Weight, systolic pressure, and diastolic pressure showed no significant differences in the first and second trimesters, but weight, diastolic pressure, and body mass index (BMI) increased significantly in the third trimester. Significant correlations were observed between gestational age and weight, BMI, diastolic pressure, TAP, MDA, uric acid, and Vitamin E. Conclusion: The study indicates potential oxidative stress progression during pregnancy, suggesting the potential benefit of antioxidant supplementation as an adjuvant therapy in pregnancy management.
