Greener Getaways: Waste Management and Environmental Education for Tourists in Telangana

The tourism sector in India has witnessed rapid growth in recent years, with states like Telangana emerging as key destinations due to their rich cultural heritage, natural landscapes, and historical monuments. However, this growth presents significant environmental challenges, most notably, the generation and improper management of waste in popular tourist areas. Increasing tourist footfall, unregulated waste disposal, lack of awareness, and insufficient infrastructure has led to visible degradation of the environment, threatening the sustainability of tourism and local ecosystems. This research paper investigates the critical role of waste management and environmental education in promoting sustainable tourism practices in Telangana. It aims to assess existing waste handling systems in tourist destinations such as Warangal, Nagarjuna Sagar, Medaram Jatara, and Pochampally, while also evaluating the awareness and attitudes of tourists toward eco-friendly practices. By identifying the gaps in current practices, the study seeks to explore viable and innovative entrepreneurial opportunities that align with green tourism principles. The paper draws on both secondary research and potential case study analysis to provide insights into best practices adopted in other Indian states like Kerala and Sikkim and international models. It highlights the urgent need for initiatives such as
